This summer my

-year-old son

and I began a new tradition—

nighttime walks. The babbling

creek across the street looks far

different at night. We have made

new friends, too, with deer,

raccoons, and foxes who stay

hidden during the day. I have

discovered that my boy is as

bright, funny, and charming as

I had always hoped he’d be. And

he has discovered that his mom

values him enough to just be

with him.

Every year our family spends an

extended weekend at the lake.

We decided on a Hawaiian theme

this year, but then our town was

hit by a devastating tornado. We

went ahead with the weekend but

had the luau at my house. Family

came from out of town and

helped make repairs. Everyone

had such a great time, and we

learned that where we hold our

get-togethers is not as important

as the time spent together as

a family.
